Coaching experience

I started coaching tennis in the late 1990s and became Head Coach at Gisborne Tennis Club in 2005. I am a qualified Club Professional Coach and have now been coaching players of different ages and levels for more than 25 years.

I still really enjoy seeing players develop their skills, grow in confidence and become more comfortable getting out on court and playing the game themselves.

Coaching style

I aim to create a positive and supportive environment where players feel safe to try, make mistakes and keep learning.

Rather than always telling players what to do, I like to use activities, questions and feedback that encourage them to explore, problem-solve and gradually develop a better understanding of their own game. I try to provide the right level of challenge for each player while keeping tennis enjoyable and giving them plenty of opportunity to actually play.

As a player

My strengths as a player were consistency, competitiveness and endurance. I was definitely a grinder — I competed hard and tried not to give my opponent an easy point.

Favourite player

Stefan Edberg. I loved watching Edberg when I was growing up. His serve-and-volley game and one-handed backhand were fantastic, but I also admired how calm he was on court and the way he carried himself.

Coaching experience

I have been the Junior Development Coach at Gisborne Tennis Club for the past 12 years. I love passing my knowledge of the game on to my students and helping them build a passion for tennis.

Coaching style

I like to think of my coaching style as energetic and full of enthusiasm. I want my students to have plenty of fun while learning new skills, and I like them to see the passion I have for the game.

As a player

Over the past few years, I have tried to become more calculated and use strategy to get the better of my opponent.

Favourite player

Roger Federer. It's got to be the G.O.A.T. The grace with which he played was magic to watch, and the way he conducted himself both on and off the court was incredible. A true gentleman.

Coaching experience

I'm a relatively new tennis coach, starting in 2024, and I've loved every minute since! In addition to tennis coaching, I've also coached at Gisborne Little Athletics since 2021.

Coaching style

I always try to make lessons as fun as possible for the kids. When I've been coached in the past, I've found that having fun has been the biggest motivation for me to come back and give it my all every time.

As a player

My speed and engine are my biggest strengths. While I may not have the power to hit a winner off every ball, I love running and will never let my opponent get a free point.

Favourite player

Alex de Minaur. Not only is he an Aussie, but he plays his heart out every match and can chase down anything!
