Hot Shots

Hot Shots helps children learn tennis using equipment, court sizes and activities that are suited to where they are in their development.

By adjusting things like the ball, court size and net height, players have a better chance to develop the skills, confidence and understanding they need to play the game successfully.

Sessions are designed to help children learn in a supportive and social environment, with plenty of opportunities to move, rally, play and enjoy tennis with others.

Our Hot Shots Stages

Players progress through different stages as their skills, confidence and understanding develop. Each stage uses equipment and court sizes suited to the player's needs.

  1. Launchpad / Blue Stage
  2. Red Stage
  3. Orange Stage
  4. Green Stage

Launchpad / Blue Stage

Launchpad is where our youngest players begin building the foundations they need for tennis and other physical activities.

Through games and activities, players develop important movement skills such as running, balancing, dodging, throwing, catching and striking. As these skills develop, children become more confident with movement and better prepared for the more tennis-specific skills they will learn later.

Just as importantly, Launchpad gives children the opportunity to learn how to play and interact with others in a safe and supportive environment. We want children to feel comfortable trying things, playing with others and enjoying being active.

As their movement skills, confidence and understanding develop, players can gradually progress into more tennis-specific activities when they are ready.

Red Stage

Red Stage is where players begin using their movement skills to learn and play more of the game of tennis.

Using a slower red ball, smaller court and lower net, players begin to build rallies using forehands and backhands, while also learning to serve, volley and understand basic scoring.

As players develop, they become more confident rallying and playing with others, making decisions and managing themselves on court. We continue to encourage effort, fair play and respect as they learn how to play the game more independently.

When players are ready, they can also begin using the skills they are developing in lessons through our Match Play program.

Orange Stage

Orange Stage builds on the skills developed in Red Stage as players become more confident playing the game.

Using a softer orange ball and a larger court, players continue developing their serve, return, rallying and net play, while beginning to use these skills with greater control and purpose.

Players also develop a better understanding of how to play points, make decisions and use simple strategies in both singles and doubles. As their game develops, they are encouraged to take more responsibility on court, play fairly, support others and become more confident managing their own matches.

As players become ready, Match Play becomes an important part of their development, giving them regular opportunities outside their lessons to use the skills they are learning in a supportive environment. This helps players build confidence, learn how to manage matches and become increasingly independent on court.

Green Stage

Green Stage is where players continue refining their game and become more confident and independent on court.

Using a green ball and a larger court, players continue developing greater consistency, control and understanding across their serve, return, rallying and net play.

Players are encouraged to make their own decisions, solve problems and become more aware of what they do well and what they need to keep practising. They also continue developing the confidence, resilience, fair play and teamwork needed to manage themselves during matches.

At this stage, many players are beginning to play regular match play or club competition, giving them opportunities to use their skills, build friendships and enjoy being part of the tennis community.
